Connecting in Seoul

The Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Institute of Actuaries of Korea (IAK) held a Candidate event on May 22 at the IAK headquarters in Seoul, Korea.

Close to 50 students attended the event, interested in a variety of issues regarding the actuarial profession, including understanding the different actuarial practice areas; whether an actuarial master program would help them be more competitive; and how to stand out from other actuarial candidates.

Speakers at the event included Susan Blanck, FSA, MAAA, Board Member and International Committee Chair, SOA, former executive vice president, Aflac Japan; Douglas, Deok Jung Kim, ASA, Greater Asia Committee member, SOA, junior actuary in Life Reinsurance team Korean Reinsurance Co.; Joseph Kim, FSA, CERA, FCIA, FIAK, CFA, Greater Asia Committee member, SOA, senior manager, consulting actuary, Milliman Korea; and Alex Do Hwan Kim, senior researcher, The Institute of Actuaries of Korea. SOA staff at the event included Dale Hall, FSA, managing director, Ann Henstrand, senior director of Asia and Latin America; and Wai Ling Yung, EdD, Asia-Pacific lead, SOA.
