Educating the Future

Actuarial Teaching Conference

The first Actuarial Teaching Conference gathered educators from around the United States and Canada.

The Actuarial Teaching Conference (ATC) took place in Indianapolis, June 22-23. This new event was developed and sponsored by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) to promote quality actuarial education, share ideas across universities and support actuarial programs by providing content to help build and enhance their programs.

Seventy five participants from 56 colleges and universities had the opportunity to network, share ideas, and learn more about the SOA and the actuarial profession during the evening networking reception and the full day of sessions that followed. “I thought the conference was excellent. It was a great way to meet other faculty members,” said one of this year’s conference attendees. “Without this, for some of us, there’s really no other avenue for actuarial faculty to meet each other.”

Comprehensive Sessions

The sessions covered a variety of topics, including SOA exam insights to help students be better prepared to pass the exams, and a moderated employer panel that featured actuaries from a variety of companies who provided information about the current actuarial job market, and shared insights into the needs of actuarial employers.

From a pedagogical standpoint, the ATC included sessions about incorporating computer languages in the actuarial classrooms and delved into the flipped classroom approach, in which class time is used for guided and interactive group learning, and out-of-class time is used for direct instruction. “I am very happy that I attended and learned several things that I will try to attempt to incorporate into my program,” noted one of the attendees.

Looking at the Future

SOA staff members presented information on the latest SOA initiatives and provided updates on recent and upcoming changes to the Education system, such as the addition of written-answer questions to Exam MLC and syllabus changes to Exams FM and MFE. The SOA staff also provided an overview of the Centers of Actuarial Excellence program (CAE) and advice on what it takes to become a CAE school.

The event was well received by participants, who indicated they found the information and networking opportunities valuable. “I am glad that I was able to attend this inaugural event, and I hope that it becomes a regular tradition,” noted one participant. “Thank you all for organizing such an excellent conference. I have learned a lot from this meeting and the networking events are awesome,” added another attendee.
