NEW: SOA 2014 Investment Symposium – The Latest on Financial Market Developments

Despite strong returns posted by the world equity markets in 2013, institutional investors are still facing a challenging environment. The U.S. Federal Reserve has announced its intention to start tapering its bond purchases, but we are still a long way from tightening. While we don’t know yet the long term impact of all this stimulus, many institutional investors are now struggling with the low interest rate environment that it has created. To make matters worse, emerging equity markets are trailing developed markets.

Whether you work in an asset-liability management department, in corporate finance, risk management, valuation or audit department, market fluctuations impact your role. The 2014 Investment Symposium on March 13 & 14, 2014 in New York City is a great place to get an update on financial market developments, but also to network with colleagues facing the same issues as you.

One key question that practitioners are asking is how other investment professionals are handling the current market environment. The 2014 Investment Symposium offers a great window to the thinking of institutional investors through its “Panel of Chief Investment Officers – Managing Investments During Challenging Times”. You will hear from Robert Leary, President of TIAA-CREF Asset Management, Seth Masters, Chief Investment Officer at Bernstein Global Wealth Management and Robert Cultraro, Chief Investment and Pension Officer at Hydro One. These individuals with diversified expertise will shed light on how pension funds, insurance companies, endowments, foundations, sovereign wealth funds and retail investors can take advantage of current market conditions.

Other noted speakers include Robert Merton, Nobel Prize Laureate, who will share his views on the challenges faced by layperson on managing their own defined contribution fund; Maria Ramirez and Jeffrey Jacobs will provide and economist and market strategist point of view on the key issues affecting the global economy and an outlook for the major regions of the world; Edward Toy of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners will discuss oversight and regulation in the investment industry.

There will be more great sessions, organized around four tracks: 1) Retirement, 2) Quantitative, Risk and ALM, 3) Economics, Accounting and Regulatory and 4) Portfolio Management. Some of the topics covered will include smart beta, investing in bitcoins, tail risk hedging, risk-parity, alternative investments, LDI and many more.

For more details and to register for the meeting, check out the Investment Symposium website. The organizing committee has been hard at work recruiting great speakers and preparing relevant sessions with strong educational content. We look forward to seeing you there.
