It’s that time again–the SOA Annual Meeting is just around the corner

by Susan Saip, 2012 SOA Annual Meeting Chair

It’s hard to believe, but the 2012 SOA Annual Meeting & Exhibit is just around the corner–Oct. 14–17 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, located in National Harbor, MD.  What an exciting time to be just minutes from Washington, D.C.!

One of the new features of this year’s event is the venue.  The meeting is being held in a convention center, so there will be plenty of room to accommodate our growing group of attendees.  The Gaylord National Resort also includes many shopping, dining and entertainment options—so when you’re not having a great time at the meeting, you can have some fun around town.

In addition, the popular SOA Annual Meeting app is once again available for mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.).  Several enhancements have been made to the app, which provides attendees with up-to-the-minute information at their fingertips.

The Annual Meeting is always a great way to get your continuing professional development (CPD) credits. Earn up to 18.30 CPD credits by taking part in our more than 100 sessions. Sessions cover the latest industry information on retirement security, health care reform, emerging technology, product development innovation, demographic trends’ impacts, principle-based pricing, enterprise risk management and more! And—new this year, we’re offering two session series sponsored by Genowledge LLC (genetic series) and RGA (innovation series).  Each series includes three sessions that are based on a unified topic.

Of course, what would the 2012 Annual Meeting be without some motivating keynote speakers?  Matthew Syed, Ph.D., writer, author and Olympian will talk about the science of success during the General Session.  Susan Cain, author of the New York Times best-selling book QUIET: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, will be the keynote at the Presidential Luncheon and will discuss the power of introverts.

This year, the Annual Meeting is focused on connecting with communities. The Annual Meeting is always a great place to connect with the SOA community—old acquaintances, new contacts, and the many volunteers and peers in your practice area. We’re offering a wide variety of opportunities to connect during the general networking reception, special events and the many section-sponsored activities. I look forward to “connecting” with you in National Harbor!
