2011 Valuation Actuary Symposium—Make it a Record-Breaking Year

The chair of the 2011 Valuation Actuary Symposium discusses highlights of this year's meeting.

By Tim Gaule, 2011 Valuation Actuary Symposium Chairperson

TimGaule Take a break from your financial reporting responsibilities and hear updates on the convergence of accounting standards around the globe, the latest developments relative to Principle Based Approaches, Solvency II and IFRS at the SOA’s 2011 Valuation Actuary Symposium September 12-13. You will learn about the significant developments that are occurring now and those that will change the nature of your work.

Last year we were only five people short of the all-time attendance record. You have the opportunity to make this a record breaking year. Please join us in Orlando and help us break the record!

We have responded to the need that you frequently mentioned in evaluation surveys to add more content at ValAct. For the first time ever, our meeting will be expanded to 59 sessions over two full days. In addition, there are two optional seminars—one on PBA and one on Tax. These seminars are scheduled to occur on Wednesday, Sept. 14, following the conclusion of the meeting. There will definitely be plenty of opportunity for you to add to your Continuing Professional Development credit.

This year there will be two great luncheon speakers at our general sessions. On Monday, our keynote speaker will be Jeffrey Ma . Ma will speak about innovative metrics in a way that will make you reevaluate how your group accesses talent, finds undervalued assets and measures the true worth of the business metrics that impact business decision-making.

At Tuesday’s luncheon and general session, Robert Callahan, Ph.D., will demonstrate how communication skills are important for actuaries, especially when communicating technical concepts to a nontechnical audience. Callahan spoke at a concurrent session at last year’s meeting, and it was the highest rated session, so to make his message available to everyone we have moved it to the luncheon presentation on Tuesday.

In response to your requests, we are pleased to offer complimentary wireless internet access to all Valuation Actuary Symposium attendees. This additional meeting benefit will allow you to access all meeting information while on site and make it easier to stay in touch with your office while traveling.

Be sure to look for our new meeting app. The SOA is pleased to offer, for the first time, a ValAct meeting application to be used on your mobile device (e.g. Android, BlackBerry, iPhone and iPad). This "app" will provide you with access to important features of the event, including session information, speakers, presentations and more, right from your mobile device.

There will also be a networking reception on Monday from 5:30-7 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity to connect with old friends and make some new ones.

I hope to see all of you in Orlando at this year’s record-breaking meeting! It should be a rewarding experience, thanks to the many volunteers and outstanding staff who worked together to develop an outstanding program.
