The Society of Actuaries (SOA) staff, and volunteers from Munich Re, recently met with faculty and students at four universities in China. They answered questions about the actuarial profession, the exam process, the Universities and Colleges with Actuarial Programs (UCAP) and the SOA Centers of Actuarial Excellence (CAE).

Jessie Li, FSA, SOA China lead representative, visited Sun Yat-Sen University accompanied by three volunteers from Munich Re. This first visit included an informal faculty meeting with Professor Song Shibin and a student presentation followed by a dinner hosted by the faculty. Some of the topics discussed included UCAP and CAE programs.

Later in the spring, the SOA visited the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Chengdu. Li met with Professor Zhang Yungang, head of the actuarial department at the insurance school. Professor Zhang inquired about the UCAP and CAE requirements. He expressed interest in being a liaison between students and the SOA.

The visit to Wuhan University in the Hubei province was in late March.

Professors Wang Zhengwen and Pan Guochen expressed their interest in collaborating closely with the SOA in the future, and plan to grow the size of the university’s actuarial program.

The SOA staff and Munich Re volunteers also visited Nankai University. Next year will mark the 30th anniversary since the SOA and Nankai University worked together to establish an actuarial program in China. Professor Li Xiufang, head of the actuarial department at the School of Finance, suggested a series of events to help mark this anniversary in 2017.

During the presentations, students inquired about the differences between studying abroad versus staying local; the most valued computer skills in the actuarial field; how to volunteer with the SOA; and the benefits of pursuing a master degree abroad.
